That's definitely part of it but that's exactly why it's so pathetic. He's the senior NFL writer for CBS.

When I had a TV, I used to turn off the audio for some of the games, because I was not into depending upon the announcing team. The idea that the players somehow owe a story to a reporter is bizarre. They are played to perform, and while they should make themselves available to talk to, they should be required to spout platitudes?
When in the stands, do you need a commentator? Do you need someone to tell you what is important? In my mind, not at all.
There are a great many competent and capable reporters doing sports today (and, frankly sports is one of the only areas when a reporter can do his job), and I applaud them, but there are all to many flacks out there who only make their nut by spieling bile. Much of what I have seen on sports TV has been building controversy in order to build a story.

Some of the most intelligent people in the world can let their bias get in the way and say something stupid. Now, someone who is impaired might say something puzzling, but they can't help it, they were born that way.
Now, usually I would go off on someone who uses the "R" word but in this case I know it wasn't used maliciously. My daughter is Developmentally Disabled, she is what is called "delayed". She didn't get there at the same time frame as other kids her age but she did get there, and she had to work twice as hard too. She graduated High School and she is independent. She takes care of her own place and her own finances and she knows the public transportation system and navigates it going between buss transfer stations, light rail, and back to busses with ease. If she needs to go some where she gets on either her lap top or Galaxy Phone and looks it up. We started her early on a road to independence by teaching her to do her own laundry and how to cook, and I don't mean putting a T.V. dinner into the microwave. One of her teachers once told us that she had learned as much as she was going to learn and that would never learn to read and write. Enter the computer, she used a Apple computer at school so we bought a P.C. so that she would know both systems. She had used the Mavis Bacon Typing program at school, we bought her one for home and she basically taught her self to type. That program also taught her 10 key and how to use a cash register. She knows that if she wants something she will have to work for it and that she does a lot better financially if she has a job than just collecting disability. She is over 30 years of age now and does quite well and my wife and I are very proud of her. Like I said, she has had to work a lot harder to get to where she is at than kids who were not born with a learning problem.
She and many of people who are in the same boat are on line and they read hurt full words like the "R" word, a word that was used to humiliate them by so called normal kids. She and others work and pay their taxes and contribute to the betterment of our society and don't deserve to be ridiculed. Yet, when they see someone use that word as an insult it still stings. Oh, and she is a die hard Seahawks fan (she is my daughter, how could she not?) and we were at the parade a year ago and we even made the paper!

The latter is true, the former is demonstrably false.
