Good, and yes - no surprise. Carpenter has been a huge (literally) disappointment, mostly because he cannot get himself into NFL caliber playing shape. It takes more than just being a mountain of a man.

For all the praise we throw at Pete and John (rightfully so), it's fair to be critical of the picks at the top of their draft boards - other than their first draft in 2010 which netted Earl Thomas and Russell Okung:

2011 - Carpenter in the 1st and John Moffitt in the 3rd, not to mention Kris Durham in the 4th
2012 - Bruce Irvin in the 1st and Jaye Howard in the 4th
2013 - Christine Michael in the 2nd, although I expect him to emerge this season; Jordan Hill in the 3rd, jury is still out on him of course.

It's armchair GM'ing, but that's what we do on fan forum boards. :D

It has not been so much their inability to hit on high draft picks, rather their evaluation of Offensive line talent. Not sure if that blame lands primarily on Cable, Carroll or Schneider, but they have struggled in picking o-linemen.
Don't know if you can blame them for Okung. There was no signs of injury problems, never the less injuries and inconsistencies have been a big problem for Okung. He has shown flashes of brilliance at times, and 2014 will be a telling year.
Moffitt was clearly a bust.
Carpenter is on the verge of being a bust. Even his college coach was surprised the Hawks took him in the first round and it appears Saban was right.
Jury is still out on Sweezy, Bailey, and Bowie, but for all the draft capital the Hawks have spent on the Oline it still remains perhaps their greatest weakness.

Yeah, I would even venture to guess they don't worry about it too much - they seem to rely on Cable to churn out a good product no matter who it is.

I'm excited to see Bowie and Bailey develop.

It's almost splitting hairs, because even with a less than stellar O Line we won the Super Bowl, handily. My concern is primarily at protecting our franchise QB, who got beat up last season.

It appears to me that they have a lot of faith in Cable with their low additions on the OL of late.
That's a big gamble considering his track record here with the higher picks and the possibility he might go elsewhere some year (I'm assuming he had a lot of input in the Carpenter and Moffitt selections).
Maybe he can work miracles with the limited talent he has been provided, but it's a high risk venture.
Let's hope they select a couple of OL that can actually improve the line this year.

Edit:
With Carpenter not working out at RT, it's really left a hole on the OL.
Here is the Depth Chart from Ourlads NFL Scouting Services webpage:

LT
76 Okung, Russell
78 Bailey, Alvin
74 Hauptmann, Caylin

LG
77 Carpenter, James
62 Van Roten, Greg

C
60 Unger, Max
61 Jeanpierre, Lemuel

RG
64 Sweezy, JR
66 Smith, Jared
63 Schilling, Steve

RT
73 Bowie, Michael

It'll be interesting to see what it looks like for the NFL Opening Game.

For all the money they are paying Bevell and Cable I have seen nothing akin to what I have seen on the defensive side of the ball. Nothing.

There is a reason no one wanted them during this off season folks. Glad to see other posters like NH coming around to that potential realization. I agree with you NH, its a big gamble to trust Cable in the context you mentioned.

Hey Greg! Nice to see you poke your head in here bro. Pete & Bo Duke are major risk takers at the top of their board no doubt ... their proficiency in the later rounds allows them to be. It makes financial sense too, hitting on the late rounds and missing early is good for the salary cap.

If you've got the time get your picks in for the 3-deep mock.

Coming around to that potential realization?
Dude, there is at least one thread a month or 2 ago where I was called out for being a "whiner" for showing that the OL has been relatively forgotten vs the DL.
I even showed draft picks and FA acquisitions over the last 2 years, but was shouted down...
I still believe it's the case, but I've had my say.

Carpenter has been one of my favorite whipping boys for the past 3 years and I think everyone here pretty much knows my opinion, so I don't see the need to go over the same ground again. But yea, no surprise whatsoever. It would have been the biggest surprise since Pearl Harbor had they picked it up.

Good news on Carpenter.

Keep him around for depth this season, then cut him later. It's that simple.

That would mean we should see 2 good O Linemen selected this year.
I hope the picks work out this time.
