Seahawk Draft Matrix

Saw this linked in a thread over at Seahawk Blue thought it was pretty interesting. Its a Field Gulls article detailing how the Hawks rate players and set up their draft board. It also gives an independent scouts opinion about what our actual draft matrix looks like, including how this drafts prospects compare to our current roster. Pretty interesting stuff.

I just had a quick look at the spreadsheet before I go to a meeting, but it's interesting to see how low they have Greg Robinson as well as where the current Seahawk players are ranked relative to the draft picks.
Example of this is Dee Ford rated higher than Michael Bennett.
It also shows the weakness of the OL after Okung and Unger and there looks like 8 or 9 OTs ranked above Bowie.
But this is just on paper and if Bowie or Bailey take a big step forward the OL would become much better.

Confirms what the Seahawks FO has said many times in the past - when it comes time for their draft pick - they will take the player who is available and ranks highest on their board - regardless of position.

Yeah I downloaded that sucker and printed (horizon) onto like 8 legal size sheets of paper to put it together on my wall at home on draft day so I can have my own 'War Room' ... cool sh!t

I also thought it was very interesting and it is just on paper. The article actually linked another article from last year that showed their matrix and it was interesting to see how players changed over the year. A perfect example of that is Maxwell. He was at like a 5th round grade after last season and now has a 1st round grade. I could see the same thing happening with Bowie and Bailey. It really shows a glaring need at OG, but also shows how good our team is from top to bottom, with over 30 players rated at the 3rd round or better. Combine that with our kickers (who are not rated), who I would rank in the top 10 in the league and well over 60% of the players on our roster rank project as starters, pretty impressive.

To be clear, that's not the Seahawks draft board, it's CBS Sports/NFL Draft Scout's Derek Stephens' draft board.

But it's with an eye on what THEY think the Seahawks are looking for after talking with Seahawks scouting/Front Office people.
It could be completely wrong, but it might also be fairly close to the final board. We'll never know for sure.

Davis Hsu who co-compiled that matrix, is a Seahawks fanatic who tweets more Hawks than anyone else, and is regularly featured on Field Gulls.

And the blue overlays of existing Seahawks players will give you an idea of where things might fit in the draft.

Take those numbers, run down the Sparqs (also on Feld Gulls), check who they've had visits with, how soon conctracts are coming up for existing Hawks, and a draftees traits like grit, competitiveness, leadership, and other character traits ... and when you study who hasn't been drafted Thursday or Friday (or even the third day) ... and you can have a clue as to who they will pick ... or why they will trade down.

Or, you can listen the national "experts" who simply cannot concenrate on what Seattle does.

Local mediaites who have moved on to the national stage, Rob Rang and Doug Farrar, seem to have been unable to understand the "Seahawks Way" in making their stabs at draft choices.
And, who can blame them, they have 31 other teams to spread their time around on.

Very interesting to see how this year's draft class compares to players currently on the Seahawks' SB Winning roster.

Looks like we cold have some good competition coming up this summer, which would be most welcomed, particularly as it concerns our OL.

That's cool sh!t right there. Unfortunately I think with all the press and attention Seattle is getting for the way they pursue , rate and go after players, that the competition and challenges grow as they move forward. Used to be UDFA's just got a call from a couple teams, saying come here, now, with ACTIVE recruiting like Seattle's leaking out, the amount of attention is going to increase 10 fold.

It sure will be tougher and with a solid lineup (except OL - had to get that in), it will be a tougher sell.
On the other hand, they have proven they will give players an honest shot regardless of how they were acquired ( examples - trade for Flynn, Low draft picks like Bowie, or UFA like Baldwin).

I was honestly surprised to find out 13 UDFA were on that SB roster last season, I knew they had a few more than most teams, but that is like 20% of their entire roster.
