Dammit. Sheriff deserves to be on a 53, and I was hoping it would be ours.

Bummer about Sheriff, but remember when it comes down to the last few spots on the roster we see play against 2nd, 3rd stringers in preseason games and the coaching staff has 30 practices to view film. I give them a pass.

The one thing I like to caveat with these 53 cuts is ... remember the level of competition these guys flashed against.

Sheriff was playing against 2nd, 3rd and 4th stringers. We see this every pre-season and get hooked on players we think are shoe-ins for the roster, and then we never hear from them again with few exceptions.

Jesse Lumsden, Kasen Williams, Troymaine Pope, etc.

I am not saying I don't think Sheriff showed upside, but the way the staff assesses them is much different from our birds eye view.

It's also no surprise that the only 2 guys that were claimed from our cuts went to Carolina - which has long-time Seahawks coach Dave Canales in place now. They are always going to look at Seahawks cuts extra closely. They are the Seahawks East now!

I get this feeling that the Panthers and Seahawks are sort of sharing the back end of their rosters cohesively. Rhattigan is someone I would have kept over Coby Bryant, considering how deep our secondary was. Rhattigan will be help the Panthers this season. As for Sheriff, it's a humbling story from delivering beer just a month a ago to be a full time NFL Player, good for him.

That's true, but he definitely looked better than the 3rd stringers and looked like he belonged with the 2s. That's the basic definition of a guy who deserves to be on a 53. I don't think he's clearly destined for greatness and I'm not upset he's gone, but I think there's a future starter there, and it's a shame we couldn't keep him.

Damn. Sheriff was performing well and what a great name. If he can blow up into a quality starter, his name is already a great nickname.
