Penalties

Postby River Dog » Mon Dec 02, 2024 10:16 am

I was browsing through one of my favorite websites, and I came across this interesting graphic about our penalties over the past 3 games, all wins.

As you can see, in the past 3 games, we have an average of 4.67 penalties per game (4 against the Niners, 5 each against the Cards and Jets). That compares with 9.375 penalties per game, over twice as many, as in the previous 8 games.

I don't know if anyone has drawn a direct relationship between penalties and winning, but it's obviously better to have fewer penalties called against you than more. And in yesterday's game, penalties were huge, as they bailed us out in several critical situations.

Anyhow, I thought it worth sharing.

To my knowledge, there has never been a strong correlation between penalties and the win-loss record. I don't worry about them too much as only the very egregious penalties a the end of games bother me. Then not for long as any team that wants to win using penalties as an excuse for losing is doomed to be a loser as they don't have huge control over refs calling penalties. Refs can screw up at any point in time and if that's their reason for losing, then expect to lose more as that isn't changing any time soon.

I've never seen a correlation between losing and penalties, either, and there's an argument to be made that some penalties are acceptable. My old man used to tell me that if you don't jump offside occasionally, then you're not focused enough on beating the guy in front of you, that you're too casual about your task.

But this past game, penalties played a huge role as the Jets drew several big penalties that kept drives of ours alive. And, I do think that the fewer penalties in recent games are a reflection on our playing better football in general.

When you are playing better and trust the system/scheme, you tend to not take as many penalties. Conversely if you find yourself lost in the system, then you have to make up for being out of position or confused.
Things like illegal cut blocks are coaching issues as well as things like illegal procedure or motion type of penalties.

It has to do with penalties, so I'll bring it up in this thread.

Jag's QB Trevor Lawrence sustained a very serious-looking head injury in their game vs. Houston when Texans' LB Azeez Al-Shaair laid a brutal, intentional head shot when Lawrence was in a hook slide giving himself up. Al-Shaair received a 3 game suspension, but there's a lot of people who feel he should be suspended for the rest of the season. To his credit, Al-Shaair has admitted his mistake, apologized to the fans and to Lawrence himself, says he didn't mean to intentionally hurt him, that he got caught up in the heat of the moment.

My take is that he should be suspended for at least as long as Lawrence is out, but no less than 3 games. I do think that the fact that he seems genuine in his admission and apology should be taken into account.

Al-Shaair has said that he's received numerous threats and some very ugly racial and Islamophobic insults, so he's getting punished by more than just the league. He's paying a heavy price for his actions.
