PFF Team Rankings Thru Week 13

Postby River Dog » Thu Dec 05, 2024 1:19 pm

I'm still bored. More PFF rankings, this time team rankings, our rank and the top ranked team in each category. These are cumulative rankings, not just for one week:

Passing: 5th. Tom Ranked: Cincinnati
Pass Blocking: 23rd. Tom Ranked: Green Bay
Receiving: 8th. Top Ranked: Detroit
Running: 7th. Top Ranked: Baltimore
Run Blocking: 26th. Top Ranked: San Francisco

Overall Offense: 12th. Top Ranked: Baltimore

Run Defense: 23rd. Top Ranked: Minnesota
Tackling: 14th. Top Ranked: New England
Pass Rush: 23rd. Top Ranked: Pittsburgh
Pass Coverage: 11th. Top Ranked: Philadelphia

Overall Defense: 18th. Top Ranked: Philadelphia

Special Teams: 18th. Top Ranked: New England

Overall Team: #13 Top Ranked: Detroit

All I can say is that we must have been ranked #1 on special teams in Week 12 to rank as high as #18 in Week 13.

Another interesting tidbit that I noticed. The 10-2 Buffalo Bills, having been the only team to have beaten the Chiefs and who are in everybody's top 5 in power rankings, have an overall team ranking of #14 out of 32 teams. Perhaps the total is greater than the sum of all the parts? I'm sure there's other oddities, but that one really stuck out.

We look like an average team. Our OL is terrible and probably the biggest reason that our offense isn't a top 5 unit. I do think that our defense has turned a corner and it will be interesting to see where we are ranked the rest of the year. If our OL can figure some things out we might be able to be a team that can win a playoff game or two.

The Bills being ranked that low is interesting. Maybe having an elite QB makes up for some of their lower areas on offense?

I'm not exactly sure how PFF arrives at their rankings, but my guess is that they simply average out the grades of all their players to come up with a team average. The Bills defense ranks 5th in points allowed and 11th in yards allowed while PFF has their overall defense ranked 19th. And it does make the case for Josh Allen as the MVP if the team is doing that well despite such relatively poor individual grades. They obviously don't factor in intangibles.

Most of the time, PFF's grades/rankings match up with other metrics. For example, the Lions lead the league in points scored per game and PFF has them as them as the #1 ranked offense.

I agree with you about our defense. The one thing about these rankings is that they are averages over the entire season. It would be interesting to see what our defensive averages over the past 3 games is like and compare it with the first 9 games.

Passing 5th and Running 7th but Pass Blocking 23rd and Run Blocking 26th. Overall Offense 12th.
maybe blocking doesn’t really matter much after all, or some good schemes and timely play calls along with explosive plays being made on Offense.

The running category is an average of the grades that Seahawks running backs (K9, Geno, Charbonnet, etc) scored, not the running game in general, or at least I think that's how it works. All that is telling us is that the problem with our running game isn't the running backs, that they are hitting their holes, utilizing their blockers, breaking tackles, juke defenders, etc, and to me, that meets my eye test as I think that K9 is one of the more underrated running backs in the league because he's running behind a horrible offensive line.
