Playing for the Patriots automatically makes you better

Postby kalibane » Wed Jul 09, 2014 9:33 am

According to KC Joyner... who is writing that the Patriots will be the best secondary next year over the Seahawks. Insider article so no point of linking. Amazing how much respect Brandon Browner is getting all of a sudden.

I just don't even have the words really. It's just something I figured could get a laugh.

Yeah, adding one of our backups opposite a guy that isn't as good as our number 1, and they're supposed to be *better* than

Maxwell (better than BB)
+ Chancellor (better than anyone in their secondary minus Revis, at least arguably)
+ Sherm (better than anyone in their secondary)
+ Thomas (MUCH better than anyone in their secondary)?

Laughable is putting it kindly.

Browner wasn't a backup and has earned whatever respect he's being given now. Maxwell may have better cover skills but BB was better at taking a guy out of his his rout off the line.

Given a scheme that will play to his strengths the way our did BB can be a stud for them. With Revis on the other side he'll still be able to jam his man at the LOS and funnel his man to the Safety covering over just as he did for us, the question for them is going to be whether Devin McCourty can measure up to Earl as that guy over the top. He's a good one, and plays a lot of single high safety for them even w/o BB in the mix, but I don't think he measures up to Earl.

+1

Loved BB, loved what he brought to the team. I wish him the best in NE. I am happy for Maxwell too. Kid stepped up big time and earned his chance to start in an epic secondary

It will be interesting to see if BB plays as physical and if so will the media complain of too much contact.
It would be a telling indictment if he is praised for his physicality in NE after being considered too physical in Seattle by many in the national media.

I wish him well in NE. He got a raw deal with the suspension in my opinion and deserves a good pay day.

You don't *think*?

Look, I liked BB a lot, but his spot was taken by Maxwell, or at least it was assumed Max had played well enough that the spot was his whether BB came back or not. IOW, whether BB was actually suited or not, he was our backup to Maxwell.

And yeah, I agree with you that BB can give them a solid secondary with his skills, but this is a relative determination, and saying that will make the Pats *better* than SEA's two guys considered the best in the league at their position, plus a pro-bowler and a '#4' that is arguably better than their '#2' is assuming an awful lot.

I agree with both wholeheartedly.

That is the key IMO and he doesn't. As to the OP, yeah that is just stupid. When a team gets better in a certain area in an offseason the media loves to overstate just how improved they are.

I think everyone liked Browner, and he is really good if he got his hands on the receiver but I don't think he's as good as people are acting like he is now that he's on NE. He was that good two years ago when he made the pro-bowl.

Last year both Thurmond and Maxwell were better than Browner. That was clear (to me at least) before Browner got injured and while I wasn't happy that Browner was injured, I was happy immediately that Thurmond was going to be playing instead of him. I was less convinced about Maxwell when Thurmond got suspended but he proved to better than both of them. Browner gets absolutely eaten up by guys like Welker and TY Hilton. And he draws too many PI's on other bigger elite WRs.

He'll be good for the Patriots but all four guys in the Seahawks secondary are better than him. All four guys in the Seahawks secondary are better than all their players except for Revis. Even if Revis reverts to the best DB in pro football it's not enough to make up for the massive advantage that the Hawks have at every other spot.

After listening to Brock and Danny, it sounds like the writer was just drumming up controversy for hits, because he kinda retreated at the end to implying the Hawks won't be as good because of complacency or some such thing.

[edit]

Now the writer is on there defending his pick of NE being better, but not doing a very good job saying "NE has good players at all positions" and not acknowledging the Hawks have *outstanding* players at all positions.

Well that's kind of what I figured... like I said I just posted this for a laugh. It's an absolutely stupid argument.

I truly appreciated how unique and effective Browner was, but as others said, he wasn't the "best" player any longer in that position, he always had issues with "fast" shifty receivers and the problems mounted as they moved forward, he was torched so bad in Indy that he was sat for the second half of the game, and it wasn't the first time he had been absolutely smoked by that type of receivers. I wish him the best, and with Revis able to lock down a receiver ( and honestly I wouldn't in the least be surprised to see NE put Revis on the faster of the receivers in games as opposed to the 'number one' if that number one be a Mega tron or Marshall or what have you) Browner has another 2-4 seasons of life in the same kind of role.

But pretending like he was 'better' than Maxwell or Thurmond in coverage is off IMHO. More Physical? Undoubtedly, but better? Nah not even close.

Well to be honest they might be the best in the AFC, but in the NFC no way, not while the Hawks are around

I wish Browner well but he was not as good as either Thurmond or Maxwell.Sherman is amazing. Our safeties are world class. This is one of the best secondaries of all time.

It isn't surprising to see the media riding NE's knob. Happens all the time. Then they flame out at the end. They are 6 points from having NO rings and haven't won anything since Billacheat got busted.
