Football has returned!!!

Postby yoder » Thu Aug 07, 2014 4:47 pm

Sure it's preseason, but football officially starts in an hour! I know the forum has been dragging for a bit, especially during the last few months (I remember this with the PI as well), but Football is back!

Thanks to everyone that has stayed here on the forums, keeping The Shack alive during the off season. What's left to talk about after 6 months of no football? Sure, there's the draft, training camp, etc. The off topic stuff has been entertaining as well.

Huge thanks to the donors, the participants, and Makena for helping me pull this off. It's the Shack Nation, by far the most informed and well spoken Seahawks community I've ever come across.

Also thanks to the readers, I have a feeling that you're half of our community. I've always been intimidated by online forums, especially within a tight community like this. It's always hard to be the new guy on the block. Regardless, we're all Hawks fans so feel free to pitch in! It's a good crowd.

For now it's game on! Go flipping Hawks!!!

We need to tackle better. Some of Manning's throws are wounded ducks.

Not liking earl Thomas returning punts.

I think the risk/reward equation is not favorable. I wish Pete would find someone else.

Wow, not sure what happened there, the refs call it a fumble, Seahawks ball, Simon over reacts, gets ejected for throwing a punch ( which from both replays I saw, he didn't) two Broncos players DO throw punches, neither is even flagged, play isn't reviewed to even see if it was a fumble or TD, just awarded as a TD. Weird series of events in that play.

That play was officiated horribly I agree, but Simon did reach out with his hand and made contact. Looked very slight. I never did see a replay that had the ball over the end zone but I'm assuming the LJ on the other side saw it? It couldn't have been the guy on the camera side.

Do you like the fact that the view officials use on replays is from the "home" network broadcast as opposed to the road team broadcast?? When the NFL says they are looking at all of the views they are only looking at half of them. Me myself I don't like that fact, a fact Curt Menefee mentioned more than a few times.

Tyrell Pryor is TERRIBLE! He should have quickly ran a play instead of calling a T.O. when he was originally gifted a 1st. down.

I saw Simon slap not one but two guys, I was under the impression that the hand had to be closed to warrant an ejection. Dumb play by Simon, but I did see two Bronc's throw close fisted punches at him ( must be trying to convince themselves that all that talk about being tough actually makes them so LOL), regardless I was under the impression that ALL scoring plays, and ALL turnovers are reviewed, and since this might have been both, not sure how they could skip it? Maybe the replay official had to drop the Browns off at the SB???? ;)

Yeah not a big fan of the "home" replay theory, think it's pretty damn dumb. As for Pryor, I haven't been impressed with his accuracy, though his wheels are pretty decent and he does look better here than he did in Oakland ( course that might just be the uniform ;). )

All I can think is that the offside view clearly showed the ball across the stripe before the fumble. In that case the replay official could have just confirmed the touchdown. I'm just speculating though.

NFL tracker I was watching reported Cliff Avril making a tackle with just over 2 min left in the 4th. Was that an error or was he really still in the game? I know sometimes several players get assigned the same number at this time of yr.

Yeah uh no, him and Bennett were pulled after the lightning delay ( as well as most starters on defense, while Offense got another series) and that included the multiple backups that were starting, by the time the 4th quarter rolled around, there was pretty much no one who's name most would recognise ( at least from last years team) Clay, Schofield and Jeffcoat played but not a whole lot of regular guys ( though I do think Farwell was playing as he is currently 3rdred string). A smattering of rookie free agents, and deep depth, a couple "competition" guys, but no Avril or anyone else expected to contribute.

I recorded the NFL Network broadcast of the game and the announcers touched on the Hawks OL having only Sweezy starting as an expected regular, but then really talked up the Denver Defense. Their OL did play pretty well against our DL the first couple of series which gave Manning time to throw. I don't know if they game planned, but it was quite obvious to me that the Hawks Defense was just trying to get their game together for the expected starters. Coyle looked pretty good at times for his first time out. He made some mistakes, but in all I think he did pretty well. Simon has to keep his emotions in check if he expects to become consistent, but he might have a future in time.

I'm still impressed with how ET's tackling has improved from 2 years ago. Now he flashes in and sticks to the ball carrier instead of flashing in while out of control.
On punt returns, I hope they find someone who is a special teamer for that duty. I really don't like the idea of putting ET in harms way unnecessarily. It's a violent enough sport as it is to expose one of your best players to more contact than he already expects to get during the year.

I hope we don't ever have to go into any game with this OL as the starting lineup. We still don't have a backup LT, but maybe they saw some potential in a player and can work with him to be at least competent as a backup and not a disaster. Britt might be OK and I didn't notice if Winston played - I suspect not.

It would have been nice to win this game, and I think it meant more to Denver than us, but just seeing Football again was a treat in itself.

Not from personal experience, for reality purposes, but from what I have heard from some who watched with a Bronco feed (TNT forum).

Got the bronco's feed here, they may not be the most biased broadcast team out there, but they are where my money would be for that title.

During the first quarter, the Hawks went toe to toe against the (second) best team in the NFL. Obviously Denver had more to prove and were playing 80-90%, we were at 70-75%. If this was regular season and all first stringers, we could have won...in their house.

Can't wait for week 3, it's going to be smash mouth football!

Lol I thought that had to be an error by ESPN No way you'd play a starter in the 4th. Maybe a duplicate number made a tackle. Tracking it online was pretty strange to see "C. Avril" come up in the 4th.
