Lack of Turnovers - Distressing!!

Postby Uppercut » Tue Oct 07, 2014 12:55 pm

I am nervous over the lack of turnovers. I though we would get a couple pics in this game but only close calls. And no fumble recoveries I think. Guess that is the way luck and the ball bounces. I can only hope Tony Romo does what he is known for when he plays next Sunday. he is overdue for tossing 4-5 int's in a game.

well, turnovers are always a good thing when they are in our favor. I am cool with the outcome regardless.

I think it is good that we are 3-1 and haven't been able to force as many turnovers as we did last year. We have forced fumbles but they haven't gone our way. We have had our hands on the ball but haven't made the INT. If we continue to put ourselves into position the turnovers will come.

There seems to be a lot of babble out there about the Seahawks defense not being what it was last year and I think the lack of turnovers falls under this umbrella. I have two points to make about that.

1. Turnovers are not predictive. Even a team that excells at forcing them can't count on having them every game.

2. The Seahawks have only played 4 games. 3 of those games were against Aaron Rodgers, Phillip Rivers and Peyton Manning, arguably the 3 best QBs in the league (for sure 3 of the top 5).

When they struggle getting turnovers against Austin Pettis and Drew Stanton then maybe I"ll be distressed.

I love turnovers, especially apple and cherry.

Seriously, though, as exciting as takeaways are if we keep winning games then takeaways are just a stat. And the most important stats are points scored versus points allowed and win/loss.

I'm not even slightly worried about the lack of turnovers. Turnovers are completely unpredictable, and they tend to come in bunches, and dry up completely for long stretches at a time.
As long as we keep winning games during the dry spell, when the turnovers come (and they will), it will be just that much easier to win games.
As long as we aren't turning over the ball ourselves, it's all good, and just a matter of time before the ball starts bouncing our way again.

It's a good topic to bring up as turnovers are what made the D lethal last year.

Against GB, I think it was just the 1 INT.

Against SD, no turnovers, but forced 4 fumbles that could have been recovered, the ball just did not bounce their way.

Against Den, had 1 fumble recovery and 1 INT.

Against Wash, I remember 2 INT's that should have been and another couple that were close.

You absolutely know teams know that the Hawks are out there looking for a turnover every play. You have to believe teams are paying special attention to this and so far have done a better job, so credit to those teams for taking better care of the ball. Well somewhat, as I said, they forced 4 fumbles against San Diego.

Not overly concerned, they will come, I just don't think we should expect what happened last year to happen every year.

Watching our D force 3 and outs is as satisfying as anything, IMO, and we have a bit more control over making them happen.

Likewise, giving up 3rd downs, particularly those over 6 yds, drives you nuts.

It's such a key stat, since most teams get between 10-14 possessions per game. Each time you make them punt, the less likely they convert on remaining drives.

The Seahawks give you very little margin for error.

We're in a good place right now, and I expect that to continue against the Cowboys, who are vastly overrated, as usual, IMO.

I agree that the Hawk defense is off a bit from what we've come to expect, and the lack of turnovers is perhaps the largest contributing factor of this slippage. We've only had 3 turnovers in our first 4 games. One encouraging thing about our defense is that we've gotten better in our run defense. Kevin Williams has helped a bunch to shore up this part of our D, and a factor that should play a large role against the Cowboys this Sunday.

But I'm not too worried, at least not yet. We've been in position to get some picks but just haven't been able to finish the deal. The turnovers will come.

If a team is able to break our defense AND we can't force turnovers then I'd be worried. Until then it's quite possible that teams focus on ball protection against us and we limit their offense because of it.

Even without the turnovers this defense is a blast to watch
