Bobby Wagner out with turf toe injury

Postby RiverDog » Tue Oct 14, 2014 6:15 am

More bad news. Wagner is arguably the most irreplaceable player on our defense. Turf toe sounds whimpy, but it's a scary, potentially career threatening injury.

Russell Okung is hurt, too, but I only wanted to share the news.

Yes - a huge loss for our Defense - especially for stopping the run.

We are somewhat fortunate that Line Backers may be the one area of our team where we have very good depth at this time.

Wagner missed 3 games last season, not going to sweat it, until the Hawks show they can't handle it. Wright to MLB Irvin and Smith move to the outside starts.

I like Wagner a lot and he has been having a great season, but we do have depth at the LB position and have played well with these same guys when he was out last season, but here's to a speedy recovery.

No one misunderstand, I prefer Wagner on the field, the best LB lineup is indeed Wagner, Irvin and Wright with Smith off the bench, but Smith can slide in to Wright's spot as he did last season, when Wagner had the high ankle sprain. Irvin I guess stops rushing the passer on third downs, and Schofield slides in ( who knows at this point though? Maybe they will keep Wright in on nickel D's, though they really haven't to this point) which is unfortunate, as Irvin has indeed been the most consistent pass rusher to this point.

I hope Wagner recovers quickly, but we have the players to fill in for however long he is gone.

Nope. Never had turf toe. Never had grass toe, either.

It sounds wimpy. A turf toe? Kinda sounds like spraining your thumb, or at least that's what I thought when I first heard about it when it was announced that Jack Lambert had turf toe. Not that I ever thought Lambert was a wimp, or if I did, would say so if he were within earshot.

Had a buddy that got it, pretty nasty, and ate up most of his season. It's no joke. A lot of injuries have kind of whimpy names ( like AC separation, Shin Splints, High ankle sprain ( I mean who can't play with a sprained ankle?) Stupid stuff like that.) Pretty much anything that doesn't have "torn""ruptured" or "broken" in front of it. How about Plantar Facietous? Does that sound terribly awful?

It ain't the name, it's the pain

I know it's not wimpy, Obi. Almost any foot or leg injury can be devastating to an athlete that depends on feet and legs to the degree that football players do. I'm only saying it sounds wimpy, like a sprained left pinky finger.
