Benched QB's RG3 & Jake Locker

Postby RiverDog » Thu Nov 27, 2014 7:55 am

First year Redskins HC Jay Gruden has been surprisingly open about his disappointments with RG3, and now he's benched him in favor of Colt McCoy. The Skins have to decide this spring if they're going to pick up his 5th year option, which at this point looks extremely unlikely. RG3 has had some PR issues as well, and the natives are getting restless (no pun intended).

Jake Locker is another former #1 pick whose team traded up for him and not unlike RG3, has had both injury and performance issues and even though he's now fully healthy, is holding a clipboard while a late round rookie quarterback by the name of Zach Mettenberger is auditioning for the full time starting position. The Titan's did not pick up Locker's 5th year option and he'll be a UFA at the end of the season, so he'll definitely be on the move.

So where do these guys end up? What's the odds that we might be seeing one of these two quarterbacks twice a season?

Never been overly impressed with Locker - Great Athlete and arm - Bad accuracy and decision making - I think he can get another chance for a team with no QB but more than likely he will become a backup QB somewhere.

RGIII? - Most definitely some other team will give him a shot at running the show - Wonder what Chip Kelly could do with RGIII running his show?

The article did mention Philly, but at this point, RG3 is still under contract and I can't see the Skins trading him to a division rival.

Agreed about Locker and his accuracy issues. Over his entire career including 4 years as a starter at UW, Jake has never had a stretch of more than 3 or 4 games where he's completed 60% of his passes.

IMHO Gruden waited a week to late. ;) as fot Locker I've had numerous disagreements with numerous people about him. Always saw him as a flawed QB at Washington and definitely in Tennessee. He is an amazing athlete with a rocket arm, course he is inaccurate, and seriously injury prone. I just don't see him ever being a starting QB in the NFL and never have. I seriously thought he was a guy that needed desperately a position switch.

As for RGIII he is turning into exactly what many of us said he would become, which was your "next Micheal Vick" , he'll be one of those guys that sits on a bench, comes in gives a spark for 4 or 5 games, has fans clamor for him to be the starter, and then proceeds to do a whole lot of nothing. Add in the whole coach killer thing he has going on only three years into the league, and I pray I never see the guy in a Seattle uniform, but would love to see him in SF or Arizona ( hell even Stl). Be my guest, just stay out of Seattle ( a team Casserly said would be a "perfect fit for him" A-hole, we got our QB thank you very much, and don't need a controversy if Wilson struggles, and certainly it would not be an "upgrade" nor would he fit simply because he is a "shorter" QB with wheels).

Where's Obi? He can tell you how much grief I had to take in the old PI forum from Husky homers due to my opinion of Jake Locker.

One of the dirty little secrets about Jake is that he isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He can't read defenses, can't go through his progressions when his first look is covered, does not 'scramble to pass' ala Russell Wilson. When Jake tucks the ball, that's where it stays.

I would love to see RGIII go to Dallas.

That would be classic.

Have you seen a fall from grace to equal this one? Rookie of the year to out to goat of the year. If he weren't such an arrogant azz, I'd feel sorry for him.

Boz took a pretty big fall from grace, from folk hero to villain in about the same amount of time.

I guess you have to excuse some of RG3 problems due to his injuries, but it's been his attitude that's been the biggest disappointment IMO. It is not something I expected as he seemed to be the picture perfect Face of the Franchise when he came out of college. If he came out like Johnny Football did, I could understand it, but I never saw this one coming.

I think with the right coaching and a bent towards more humility, RG III can still be a quality starter in this league. I'd say STL or Philly would be the best spots for him.
Locker is destined to be a QB2 somewhere. I like the guy, but I hope he gets his QB2 job somewhere other than Seattle.

Also with RG III, there are few places (perhaps NYJ) worse than Washington for developing a guy like RG III. Daniel Snyder and his revolving door at HC have created a mess of an organization, from the team name all the way to FedEx field.

I hear you, Belize. He might have done a lot better with an already established team or like in Seattle where he could develop without having to carry the team and be subject to not playing if he wasnt ready or didn't do what the coaches wanted. The sense of entitlement would have been stripped away early.

It's another example of players not producing because of the situation they were drafted into, not because of a lack of talent.

Locker Is far and a way the better prospect of the two but he is snake bit with injuries. He looked extremely good early last season until the hip injury that ended his season. But at least hes a good teachable humble kid.Hes probably a #2 although Id take him over some of the guys starting around the league if he could just stay healthy long enough to develop.

RGlll has never been a consistently good pro other than the stretch run in his rookie year. And even then he missed 2 games and part of a 3rd with injuries. His ROY was a joke and he is 1-11 in his last 12 starts. Grudens surgical post game presser was like shining a flashlight on a cockroach in how it exposed just how little RGlll grasps of the pro game in his 3rd year. My guess is hes out of the league in a couple of years unless he really commits himself to working hard and loses his attitude.

At least Boz could play. Boz was indeed vilified, and I suppose rightfully so but it was purely injuries that ended his promising career. He was electrifying when healthy. Injuries have clearly played a factor in Griffins demise as well but his habit of blaming teammates and coaches for his failures has cost him the locker room. I didn't see it coming prior to the draft either but I could see it coming in his rookie year.
