2015 Seahawks Free Agency

Looking at both the Restricted and Un-Restricted Free Agents at the end of the season it appears that the Seahawks are in a really sweet position - especially when compared to last year when the Hawks had Bennett, Tate, Giacomini, McDonald, Haushka and a couple others entering free agency.

There is only one player close to a "Must Keep" and that is Byron Maxwell. I don't think that Seahawks will be able to keep Byron because Byron will be able to command a Significant contract from a number of conerback starved teams.

Other than Maxwell the Seahawks will probably want to lock up Schilling for a while longer.

Maxwell is going to command a pretty big salary, so I wouldn't be surprised to see us let him go. We have bigger fish to fry with re-signing Wagner and Russell.

And while I agree that he's not in the "must keep" category, we're going to have a tough time replacing James Carpenter as we're already thin up front. This is by far his best season, and someone's going to pay him more than we'll be willing to.

I'm putting a vote in for Kearse, he has made some big plays for us and has steadily improved under Camp Carroll (until the injury).

As with every year in Seattle and the rest of the NFL some will go, some will stay, at least there isn't perennial all pro's dotting that list... I think some of those will be retained, and would guess Kearse, Carpenter, Schilling, Johnson, Schofield and Dobbs will be some they make solid offers too, that said, Maxwell ( as I said last season) will go the way of Thurmond III, unfortunately, there is only so much money available for the DB's, I could see an offer extended yet again to T-Jack of the one or two year variety depending on his market.

Fortunately, the Hawks this offseason can "pick and choose" and decide how much or if they want to bring a player back, giving them the ability to supplement, or upgrade through the draft or FA. There seems to always be the "bargain" guys available late, that the Seahawks seem to be able to mine for value, and don't expect that to change in the least.

The other one IMO that is key is Jeanpierre.

He's done a good job subbing for Unger, who tends to get dinned up somewhat frequently.

"must keep" is a term for a gun that is "mostly loaded".

They could franchise Maxwell, but that would suck up a lot of cash amongs the other guys "they would like to keep" what with new deals for Will and Wags.

In order, my guess would be for "would likes" to be young and cheap, with a couple exceptions for age: those being Jackson ... and perhaps Moeaki if Miller isn't coming back .... and his contract could doom Zach unless he re-works it.

Dobbs has been getting favorable reviews, even with the injury, and age is in his favor.

HOWEVER ....

...until I know their filters for F/A's from all the other teams, along with their stealthful later round draft sleepers, I would think Kearse might be a victim with such a mix after the emergence of Richardson and Norwood. They still want a big possession guy with some speed. And they probably would like a punt returner capability in any new WR.

Jeron Johnson is another guy who might be in limbo, but, I believe they would like to retain him.

They cut Jean-Pierre and signed him back as no one claimed him ... and, I suspect they might cut him then re-sign him just before the regular season.

BUT ...


"must sign" is just too nebulous with applied to this group.

I think Kearse would have to accept a very 'reasonable' (small) contract before I would resign him as Paul Richardson is heading toward being the starter next year and Kearse will be a back-up.

I agree on resigning Carp as I do see improvement during the year and I appreciate his, at least trying to improve his physical prowess. No more then 3 years

I think Maxwell would be nice but may be a luxury as CB are gold right now and a starting CB on a Super Bowl Winnerx2 will be even more overpaid. My opinion is with the coming on of Tharold, who I personally think will be better then Byron moving forward, if he isn't already, as his 6' 4" frame is perfect for the Hawks.

Maybe Byron agrees to move inside, as those weeks when Lane was hurt and that was the lineup was real impressive.

I hope that we can keep O'Brian, Kevin Williams, and a few others. Looks like a lot of interchangeable parts, but yeah, nothing we can't live without.

And yet most of the nation still comments that we're going to lose all the important pieces to free agency. Yeah, OK.

Kearse might come back at a bargain basement price. He's a local guy anyway, so we might get a home town discount, but as Bird pointed out, we still have Norwood and Richardson waiting in the wings. Getting a WR that can return punts shouldn't be thought of anymore of a desirable added than two free oil changes influencing a decision to buy a $30,000 car. We need a big WR that can create some mismatches and help our red zone offense along with being a good blocker. Putting someone dependable back there like Walters to fair catch punts is fine with me. Half the decent punt and KO returns are called back, anyway.

I don't think Carpenter is coming back. Guards are a lot easier to replace than tackles when you're picking in the lower part of the draft and there could be some concern that after re-upping, Carp might slide back into his old bad habits. It wouldn't surprise me to see them draft a guard with our top pick. The real dilemma on the OL will be the following year when we have to make a decision on Okung.

They definitely need to add to the interior of the OL and maybe plan for a possible replacement for Okung.
I keep talking about Cameron Erving from Florida St. He was considered a high pick at LT last year and moved to Center in November where people are saying he is probably the best Center in the draft.
He's a former DL who is big, strong, quick, smart, and can play just about any position on the line. Sounds to me like a Cable type of guy.

So my concern with Richardson being a starter is now we have 5'10" and 6' as our starting Wrs. We need some size at one of the 2 starting spots.

I would like to see them keep Kearse and Schofield for depth. I really like Max but I'm fine with Simon moving into his spot.

I know Richardson is small... but, Steve Smith is about 5' 10" and he's done pretty good in his career. I know 'big' receivers are the going thing, but we also set trends in the league, so going to small, quick ones may be the new way to go.
