Memories of Oilers-Bills

Postby RiverDog » Sun Jan 18, 2015 5:10 pm

Without Googling, the Oilers-Bills AFC Championship game, Warren Moon vs. Jim Kelly..er, Frank Wright? That's the only major playoff game I can think of that tops what we just saw. I'm speechless.

It was by far Russell Wilson's worst game as a pro, but he pulls it together and leads us to our second straight SB. Richard Sherman playing hurt, perfectly executed onsides kick, Jon Ryan and the fake FG, Beast running like a man possessed....just wow.

I talked about that game with a buddy earlier tonight.
An even bigger deficit - and absurd one, really - overcome by Buffalo.

But...it wasn't a game that had as high of stakes as this one, and the Bills started their rally early in the 3rd qt.

Take nothing away from Buffalo - it was a huge miracle of it's own - but the time constraints of the Seahawk's win today makes it equally, if not more so, impressive.

Bottom line: We Won!

Still can't believe it!

We're alive, RD!

We're alive to defend our title!

Go Seahawks!!!

Yeah, I talked about that with my brother right after the win, but IMO the circumstances and importance in this game trump it. That game the comeback started in the early third Quarter, this started AFTER an interception that most thought had ended the game, and was done in 44 seconds. Simply unbelievable on so many levels, and the stars and planets had to align perfectly to even have a shot.

Oh, I agree. And as I recall, the Buffalo quarterback and their offense, I think it was Frank Wright, did not play near as badly as Russell and our offense did through 3.5 quarters, and it didn't have a divine intervention like the bounce off the helmet onsides kick like we had go our way, nor was there a fake FG-TD to a rookie backup offensive tackle. Our game was full of surprises. The Buffalo-Houston game and the Music City Miracle are the only two that deserve to be in the conversation, at least as far as NFL playoff football is concerned.

Riv,

It was Frank Reich that led that comeback for Buffalo.

They did bring up a game that was somewhat similar with Holmgren today, granted it was a regular season game, and it played out to Seattles detriment, but Baltimore did something similar in 03' against the Hawks. Up 17 with 6 minutes and change the Hawks ended up losing in OT. I had cut that out of my memory......

I remember the Baltimore game, but I thought it was in '04 in the Year of the Dropped Passes starring DJack and Koren Robinson, but I could be wrong. And prior to that, we blew a big lead on a MNF game against the Cowboys and lost, although I'm not sure if it involved an onsides kick or not.

Holmgren presided over 3 such collapses. The MNF debacle with Dallas as has been mentioned where the replay official was filmed eating hot dogs while Keyshawn Johnson was credited with a TD when he only had one foot in.That one was lost when Seattle couldn't squeeze an onside kick. Then the Ravens game in 2003 being beaten by an absolute backup journeyman Anthony Wright including giving up a 4th and forever pass. It was one of Holmgrens worst ever jobs of clock management and the Ravens got a 4th timeout when the officials failed to wind the clock after a Ravens penalty. SA tripped over the 40 on 3rd and short rather than take on Ray Lewis in the hole. That was brutal but the worst I remember was the week 4 collapse against the Rams in 2004 when the Hawks blew a 17 point lead in the final 6 minutes. That game featured Cannabis Koren dropping several perfectly thrown balls and SA doing his marshmallow act in short yardage along with more brutal coaching decisions.

Its great to be on the other side of that feeling.

I thought so to, but figured Holmgren would know ( thought thinking back, wasn't it the 04' / 05' SB? Which would make the 03' season, "the season of the drop"?? )...

The Cowboys game was the Julious Jones extravaganza with the ONE FOOT no time TD by Keyshawn right? STILL pissed that that wasn't reviewed, the man had ONE foot in bounds, and never came close to a second  GD, I don't want to be remembering this stuff... LOL

That's the irony of that game. Had the call been correctly made and we won, we would have gone to the playoffs, lost in the first round, Erickson would have kept his job, Holmgren would have gone somewhere else, and we would have been a perpetual 7-9/9-7 team through the next decade.
