I am opening up a used car dealership in Las Vegas. Still so much red tape to go through, but it should open later this year

Congrtatulations and good luck.

May I offer you to review the Golden Tate signing Technique in Detroit as a model for training you salesmen?

Golden was just going to be there in Detroit for the morning and then fly out in the early afternoon. However a snow storm cancelled his flight so he remained in the Lions facility and took a nap. While he was there inside the Lions Facility his agent and the Lions front office hammered out a contract over the next few hours. When Golden awoke the terms were ready and he was asked to sign before he left the premises. (note the hawks had also significantly raised their offer to golden)

So it was the old "Don't let them walk off the lot" technique that the Lions used on Golden and got him to sign the deal before he left the premises - apparently Tate had expressed that he originally wanted to fly back home and think about it overnight.

In his post signing interviews Golden really sounded like he regrets leaving the team - I think that if he had the opportunity to return home and think about it he would have rejected the Lions offer and signed with the Hawks - But the Lions had him in their environment with an offer that was only good at that time and Golden succumb to the high pressure sales technique (probably also from his agent too who gets paid more with a larger contract) and signed before he left the Lions facility that day.

I honestly "think" that the only reason he went to Detroit was to get an offer that he could use to force the Seahawks to raise their offer to a value closer to what he and his agent thought it should be - I don't think he had any real intention of signing - But just like so many people who walked into a car dealership with an intention or plan to buy something practical and instead they walk out with a fully loaded Chevy Suburban and only after they return home do they regret that they now have an 84 month car payment....

LOL well put.

there is the old nasty image of an auto dealership ran to try and squeeze every penny out of every soul, ruin lives, and shove them into contracts they are bounded to for ever. I have heard them all. I agree there is a bad side to the Auto Business, as well as a good side. Sadly there they both profit, and generate tremendous amounts of tax revenue for the county/city/state and therefore it is really hard to take the crooked dealers down. I currently live in AZ, and there is a well known group call the Van Tuyl Auto group who is known for being overly aggressive, and sometimes manipulating in their sales process. It's shame that it still exist.

However to answer your little scenario. From a Car Sales Perspective we do want to try and close ever sale we touch. However there is a soft close vs hard close. I will give you an example of each that can give you understanding where everyone wins. For the most part most clients are just looking and really don't like to shop for cars. They hate the process, and much hate the games. I have been doing it for over 15 years, and I have seen it all. However but the key process in making a sales transaction feel safe, genuine, and presentable is to try and get a commitment from both parties. Which hence comes the "what if" game. What if I did this? What if I added this? What if I threw this in? What if I painted your house? Who knows, and actually the 'what if' processing isn't designed to get anyone to buy, it is just to reach a commitment. That is it, plain and simple.

I get customers all the time that come and see me on a vehicle and say "That is great, and we love the car, but we need to think about it?" Typical Customer response, but at this point I haven't established a commitment from the client. So I would respond with "Folks I understand you are out shopping for a vehicle, and forgive me for saying this but I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask you what I can do to earn your business right now?"
Now the response can be given to me in many different ways, but most times it is " no I am not buying today or I am not ready"
Then I would say "of course you aren't, and I understand that, but if you were buying today under what terms would work best for you? because Mr/Mrs customer if the terms don't make sense I wouldn't expect you to buy either"
So here is the soft close, and they would respond with a firm "Not today or definitely have to think about it" Which means they for surely aren't buying... or they throw out "well if I were buying today, I would want 'bla bla bla' So here is where you have a commitment, under a soft close. Regardless how crazy those terms are, you have a commitment to buy. Almost 90% of the time the terms are so far from reality, but the bottom line is you have them committed. Then you hit the customer with a hard close, and say" So based on what you are saying if I could give you 'bla bla bla' you would buy today?"

In the case of Golden Tate, I think his agent and the Lions were probably probing him for what it will take, and I am pretty sure that Tate had started high, almost so high that he knew the contract was much higher than what the Seahawks would give him that it was enough to tip it from a soft close to the hard close. In the end everyone wins, and most times there isn't any regret. However I do think buyers remorse sometimes attributes to the buyers own fault as well. I can tell you countless stories where I felt customers researched themselves into the wrong situation, and it is no fault of the dealer.

Funny analogy w/ Golden & the car. I think both the hawks & GT will regret this decision. Unless Caldwell & co make significant cultural changes & shift the mindset of team leaders (on the player side)- the Lions have been dysfunctional in an almost 180 degree way from how the hawks have been healthy. Stafford refused QB coaching (how is that even tolerated??) and seems a bit of a blame shifter (maybe accounts are misleading)... A far cry from RW & Pete.

I sincerely hope it works out well For him. I've come to care quite a bit about him.

We had a miserable car buying experience in Palm Springs this year. In fact, we left the dealership in our old car as the guy out-n-out LIED. We have not had that type of negative experience EVER so it's not an indictment of the profession. It's an indictment of these losers at Palm Springs Volvo. He thought he had us, that we were emotionally invested in the change and that we had enough money that he opted to play with the truth in such snake oil salesman manner that we told him to pound sand and we left.

GOOD luck, PiPpy. I know you'll do well.

Again I hate to see that there is a sales process who just treats people like that, and I really do. I try to sell cars to people the way I won't to be treated. Being that I have been doing it so long, that I am one of few independent sales professionals who were able to sale cars front to back. Meaning I would be the first and last person you would ever see in a dealer. So basically I would greet you as a client, take you on a test drive. Work all numbers in my office on a computer and print your docs right there. There would be no back and forth with a manager, there would be no next manager coming in to try and talk you into a purchase. If we didn't reach an agreement I would shake hands and wish them the best.

Now I am going all in.. I have made some good investments in the Forex Market, and putting all my life savings into this. So its do or die for me... lol however I appreciate the support, and I pray for your health!

4Xpips - Best wishes for success - It takes a lot of courage to Invest a lot of your own money and start your own business - you deserve whatever rewards you reap. Most Auto dealership businesses operate in a decent business ethics manner.

Sorry I did not mean any disrespect with the "Not letting them leave the lot" analogy - In order to survive in sales as you you know better than me - you have to know how to "Close". The Lions Front Office probably knew that this was the time and place to "close" the deal with Golden Tate.

Speaking of "Closing" I am reminded a clip from the greatest sales movie of all time - Alec Baldwin gives a legendary motivational speech to the Sales staff that was so good he was nominated for an academy award for this one scene - and this was his only appearance in this movie.

Finally bought my Seahawks SB hat! And through this site, naturally:)

There were a couple of poor reviews for the hat in terms of the logo being glued on, while everything else was sewn in. Has anybody received a hat that they were unhappy with for whatever reason?

Just curious.

LOL that they charged me sales tax for my state (CA). I've never paid any tax when ordering online before, just the cost of the item and the shipping charge. Oh well. More money for my local government to waste, with a slim shot of putting it to good use:)

Yoder - Down the road here I'm looking to contribute more than just a couple of bucks that this sale generated for you. The Shack is my home. I belong to 2 other Seahawks sites, but this is my main go to place.

As such, I feel an obligation to help the cause, and will do so in a more appropriate fashion when I can. I understand - and you mentioned - that nobody here is obligated to do so, but I feel it's necessary when my situation improves a little, lol. Thanks again for all the work you do here.

We all Love It, bro.

Zorn, your post made my day! First off, thanks for ordering through the Shack...every little bit helps! I'm about a third of the way there.

I'm not sure what's up with the hat, but the NFL shop is a valid store. Maybe you could call their customer service department?

Regardless, this is the greatest Seahawks community online...I'll do my best to keep it alive.

Thanks again! Another thanks to everyone else that has pitched in...you guys/gals rock!

I agree. Everyone here who has joined should have at least donated $10. I did more, and I am not bringing it up to brag or make me feel like I am better than anyone. I did more to cover those who wouldn't. Like most posters here from the PI, I truly was on board the very first minute that this was a concept. I can't expect others to feel the same way I did about this site when it started, but it isn't much to ask if most would just help contribute $10. I will continue to contribute in the future, but I hope others feel compelled to do so themselves.

Everyone please consider the commitment we have all made to this site, and not to mention the year we had as fans. It takes no shame in the limit you can contribute. Times like this money is tight, and we all have personal priorities.

Here is a tip, if you can't chip $10 in, try and go online to sites like or coupon.com or any site out there that has various online coupons. For instance I like to eat at On the Border, and I went and registered on their site to receive deals, by doing so I got a buy one get one free meal deal. Find something you like to do, whether it is carwash, or restaurant deal, or massage. Who knows, and take the deal that is $10+ in savings and apply it. Something you normally would do, and now you have achieved a little extra savings. Take those $10 dollars and pass to Hawkshack.com

Oh no worries Savvyman! Believe me I have a thick skin from being in this business for a longtime. I certainly agree with you that there is a bad image in this business, and it does agree. I took no offense to it at all, and I believe you have every right to your opinion. Stories like that is what I strive to not treat customers

Just made a small donation Yoder from north of the border. It's not much, but I will try and donate the same amount whenever I can to help out.

Someone mentioned that our Super Bowl win would not have been the same without this place, and that is the truth.

Thanks again for creating and maintaining this site.

Thanks for keeping us afloat, agent86. If everyone just pitched in a dollar a month, we keep this place & keep it advertisement free. Thanks Yoder & Mak!

By the way, got my t-shirt & DVD... Sadly, people around here think 3 times is enough to watch the Super Bowl - & because I'm a chemo patient, friends and family want to make sure I have company. :-/ I just wanna watch my new DVD

Just got my SB hat in the mail today.

Looking good.

Nothing like walking around with it on, 15 minutes away from their new stadium in Santa Clara.

Awesomeness.

As I mentioned earlier today, I want to maintain the integrity of this forum...and promote it...yet not let it turn into a thousand topics per day type of community.

So after several requests, I've finally caved in. If you're able to donate to The Shack, please do. If not, no worries. During the Off Season, I plan to add more and more to this website...not just the forums. You can either donate, or buy gear.

As I mentioned earlier today, I want to maintain the integrity of this forum...and promote it...yet not let it turn into a thousand topics per day type of community.

If you'd like to pitch in, go here: http://www.hawkshack.com/store/

Thanks to everyone, this is the absolute greatest Seahawks forum on the internet. We'll keep it rolling!

Go Hawks!!!

With the season about to start, I felt this needed bumping.

I hope we are all doing our part to help maintain the site. I am going to send another small donation this week. It's not much, but if everyone can chip in a little bit, I know it will help the creators of this site.

Thanks again Yoder, I can't tell you how much I appreciate coming here everyday and reading.

Thanks Agent, I really appreciate the help. Another big thanks to everyone that has stepped up. We're definitely not making a profit from this site, which isn't the goal, but hosting costs and maintenance do take time and $$$. Another thanks to my good friend Makena for helping out. Eventually we'll have all sorts of great things on this site, aside from the forums.

I'm just glad to have everyone here, engaging in conversation about the greatest team in the WORLD! I'm looking forward to another great season for the Seahawks and The Shack!

Go Hawks!!!
