O/T Oops in Indy / Jim Irsay arrested on four felony counts

Postby Zorn76 » Mon Mar 17, 2014 4:16 pm

Wow.

Looks like he has a serious problem, the arrest perhaps being the least of his concerns in the long run.

I wish him well in his recovery. For those who have struggled with any kind of addiction, it's a big thing to overcome. Good luck to you, Mr. Irsay.

Years ago the Police got new laws written that make carrying perscription drugs that are not in their original container a felony... however, since it looks like all 4 felony's were for the same offense, and being that he is a gazillionaire, I'll bet they come up with written prescriptions that cover those drugs and the charges are all dropped, except for the underlying count... driving under the influence.

...but he does need help. He's an addict and the NFL should suspend him for his own good until he seeks and gets help.

How do you go about suspending an owner?
They aren't subject to any CBA or other agreement (that I know of) and fines would just be pocket change.
Not only that, but Goodell answers to the owners, so doling out punishment might be a touchy situation.
Perhaps the other owners will get together to mete out punishment that looks good to the consumer even if it has no teeth.

Believe it or not, there is a precedent for disciplining an owner that has run astray of the law.

Former 49'ers owner Eddie DeBartolo was fined and barred from active control of the NFL franchise for one year after he plead guilty to failing to report a felony. It probably doesn't have much bearing to Irsay's troubles, but it is the only case I can remember of the league disciplining an owner due to problems with the law.

If I remember right, that incident led to the failure of a previously voter approved stadium deal between the Niners and the city of SF to build a new stadium near Candlestick.

Was he the owner when that happened or was he the GM?
For some reason I thought he was GM at some time prior to owning the team which would make it easier to punish him.
Or was he a Jerry Jones type who did both?

He was the owner.

I can't remember all the details, but there was quite a bit of legal wrangling that resulted in the transfer of ownership to the Yorks and the overturning of the deal that voters had approved for a new stadium. San Francisco approved a new stadium at about the same time Washington voters approved a new stadium for the Seahawks.

I wonder also about what's happening with the Browns owner?
If I'm not mistaken, there's a cloud over Pilot Flying J which he owns, about keeping fuel rebates or something like that.
I wonder if he could also be subject to some type of sanction if it leads to the top?

Pretty sure the league can dole out punishment. They have fined guys numerous times, and there is the Debartolo example. Goodall answers to the owners, true, but ultimately it is like answering to a corporate board, not 32 independent bosses, so if a board member does something that they have all voted into place, a single, or even multiple board members can and do get punished by the league for actions, or circumvention of the rules in place.

Sounds reasonable.
I guess we will never know their rules like we do the CBA.

He'll get a slap on the wrist. IMO

He has deep legal troubles as it is.
Now in addition to having to face the owners.
I'd be a tad embarrassed.

it was a long time ago, but when the Rams owner died and his wife, Georgia Frontierre (sp?) took over, all she did is come out as a anti-semantic among other issues and was kicked out of the league (no contact) for at least one year. She didn't really commit a 'crime'. Moral of the story: Don't screw with the Jews!

Then there was Marge Schott, former owner of MLB's Cincinnati Reds, who was suspended from baseball for some politically incorrect views she expressed on Adolph Hitler.

The analogy between the NFL owners and members of a board of directors is a good one. Goodell is like a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He answers to the board (owners) as a whole, not individually.

I have no love for the Irsay family ever since their midnight hijacking of the Colts.

That family can jump in a lake as far as I am concerned. But, I also blame the politicians for bs'ing around with a decrepit Memorial Stadium and not getting things done. Idiots, all of them.

Am I missing something here? I click on the link provided and it goes to the John Moffit story. I thought we were talking about Jim Irsay.

As in most relocation issues, such as there was in our losing of the Sonics, there is a lot of blame to spread around, including the pols. But the fact is that Irsay left well before he had to. He was benefiting from a bidding war between Indianapolis and Phoenix in addition to the one he had going on with Baltimore. He didn't want a good deal that would keep the team in Baltimore, he wanted the absolute best possible deal. Indeed, he didn't even wait for a reply to his own latest offer as he executed the move less than two days after he made a proposal, not even waiting for an answer to it.

March 27, 1984: Irsay presented a new list of demands by phone to De Francis, including a $15 million loan at 8 percent interest; a guaranteed average home attendance of 43,000; and an offer of $6.6 million, up from $4.4 million, to purchase the training complex. Meanwhile, the State Senate approved by a vote of 38-4 the eminent domain legislation that would give Baltimore power to seize ownership of the Colts. It had not yet gone to the House of Delegates.

March 28, 1984: De Francis and Schaefer each tried twice to reach Irsay by phone to tell him the city would accept a new list of demands. Irsay did not take the calls. Shortly before 10 p.m., the moving vans arrived in Owings Mills.

Little bit of an update re: Irsay and what he's possibly looking at, though we all know he won't likely spend a day in jail.
