Melton to the Cowboys

And on a one-year deal, too (terms not disclosed yet). The fact that it's only one year makes me wonder if the Hawks just didn't want him that much, or if they're trying to land Allen. Melton says that his familiarity with Marinelli was what led him to sign there, but I have to imagine that a comparable offer from a team with a legit shot of getting him a ring would have had him singing a different tune.

As someone said in another post, he's going home to Texas so he probably took less to prove himself in front of his family and friends.
That can be a double edged sword with a lot of distractions, but you can't blame him for taking going home over far away.
I think he might have done better here in a rotation while his knee fully recovered instead of Dallas where he will probably have to play full time.

Wow, his contract was much higher than I thought. Apparently he gets 5 mil this year and then if the team picks up his option next year he gets the next three years of his contract at 8-9 mil per year, although not all guaranteed. Basically it is a 4 year 29 million dollar deal (which is more than we gave Bennett), with a little protection for the Boys. I was really hopping that we would be able to sign him, but that contract is too high when we have other needs to fill. On a side not I don't think there is any way the Boy's can use their option on him next year as they are in a horrible salary cap situation. Romo's cap number next year is 27 million Bwaaaaa Haaaa Haaaa Haaaa!

Here's an interesting comment from the link that I didn't catch the first time:

"Bears general manager Phil Emery expressed a desire to re-sign Melton for 2014 but also voiced concern about the defensive tackle's commitment to football."

A bit of a red flag if that's the case, but maybe it's a little bit of sour grapes from Emery.
If it was even a small concern it might be the reason the Hawks didn't offer more for him considering Pete's complete buy-in philosophy.

Not too worried about missing out on Melton.

Be much more bummed if we don't land Allen, since his motor and motivation cannot be questioned.
