+1. Yeah he will be missed. Bad decision by the FO, he was a heart and soul of the Hawks type guy. And absolutely fearless, he didn't even know what alligator arms were, or fair catches for that matter. Bummer.

I don't think he'll be missed at all.
I don't think it was a bad decision either.
We are paying a ton of money to a receiver who is FAR, FAR better than Tate. Percy Harvin will easily replace Tate, we won't miss Tate even slightly.
What would have been a bad idea by the front office is to pay a bunch of money to a player who is completely redundant, not nearly as talented as a player we're already paying a bunch of money to, when we have several players who need new contracts.
Now THAT would have been a bad idea.

I just couldn't disagree more.

Here are some interesting numbers to back up my point. I got these from a VERY interesting read I recommend at field gulls. http://www.fieldgulls.com/2014/3/22/5537280/deconstructing-golden

Explosive plays last season.
Golden had 20
Doug Baldwin 17
Jermaine Kearse 10.
Golden had more than either of them, but he had more opportunities 163,(targets + carries + returns) to create an explosive play.
That translates to a 12.3% explosiveness efficiency.
Baldwin 98 opportunities (17.3%)
Kearse 59 (16.9%).
Harvin had 4 explosive plays in just 12 opportunities. Which is utterly ridiculous but not at all surprising if you had watched him at all in Minnesota.

Game changing plays.
Baldwin 7
Kearse 5
Tate 4

Also, when you look at all the other players numbers, it would be easy to argue that was Tate extremely expendable. An argument could be made that, if Kearse and Baldwin had gotten the same number of targets, Tate would have been our third best receiver. No matter how you look at it though, he was definitely NOT more valuable than either Baldwin or Kearse. So why should the Seahawks pay him as though he was?

Furthermore, if you look at what each of these three did in BIG games, it gets even worse for Tate, who tended to disappear while Kearse, and especially Baldwin tended to step up. You could argue that Tate was getting covered by the defenses best cover corner (I would agree with that BTW, he often was, so that too must be factored in), but even with that caveat, Tate big play/game changing play percentage is lower than either Kearse or Baldwin's and gets even lower in the most important games.

Point of all this is, in terms of competition, Tate got beat out not by a free agent from another team but by Kearse and Baldwin, and OBVIOUSLY Harvin, and THAT is why he's no longer a Seahawks WR...he would have gotten paid too much money for a #4 WR type of production, in a year when the draft is SO deep with receivers.

I agree that Kearse, Baldwin and of course Harvin are all explosive players who not only make amazing catches, they do it in big games. its the punt returns and harvin's health that make me wish GT was still on the roster. On paper, I think our need at WR is not Tate, assuming Harvin stays healthy. Instead, we need a tall guy to replace Rice. Hopefully we get Rice back on the cheap. I hear a lot of folks talking about the Hawks picking Florida State WR Benjamin with our #32, but if folks are talking about him its like a guarantee we won't pick him.

I understand the worry, but if all you want Tate for is to return punts and back up Harvin just in case, then he isn't worth even half the money he was given by Detroit.
That's sort of the whole point behind letting him go...his production won't be missed because it will easily be made up by Kearse and Baldwin getting more opportunities, and surpassed by Harvin doing anything Tate could do, only FAR, FAR better.
Add to that the likelihood that they draft a WR in this WR rich draft and letting Tate go was absolutely the right thing to do.
They made him an offer, one he called insulting, but that offer was commensurate with what the Seahawks would have wanted him to do, which is back up Harvin (so a #4 receiver) and return punts.

Rather than missing him next year, my guess is the passing game will be MUCH better than it was this year, partly because Wilson will be better in his third year, but mostly because Harvin will be our #1 WR instead of Golden Tate, and without Tate, Baldwin and Kearse will get more chances, anyone we draft will have to compete for targets.

Me too, Pasadena. He was a stud & made great after great play (w/ a few running backward plays losing us the first down ;). I think we miss him the most. We were easily a 10/11 win team w/out him, IMHO - which clearly changes the playoff dynamic. I do still think this was our year-mojo wise and we were going to win. Though I love GT and am sad that social media gives dip-wad fans a direct and unfair shot at a gladiator. I hate that his memories of Seattle are tainted.

That said, we have a finite cap space number and a team full of budding superstars who have to get paid & positions now that are harder to fill w/ excellent players. Bennett, Hauscka, & Miller were huge.... And we have needs greater - like cc replacement and our major # 1 need Oline fortification. I gotta think that Pete, John (&even Tom/Pat) are on this like a pack of dogs on a 3-legged cat. I have faith. I have a ton of faith in Harvin's abilities too (off the charts) but worry a little bit that we don't have WR depth. One or 2 go down (Harvin is a likely candidate here:( ) and we are done.

We lose one or two of almost any position, we could be 'done.' Suppose we lose Earl and Sherman, or Bennett and Mebane, Okung and Unger, or KJ and Wagner? For any team to win the Super Bowl, the stars have to line up just right, like ours did last season. There's an element of chance in every season, and IMO we're just going to have to hope for the best that Harvin comes to the party.

I don't see how anyone could get mad at Tate considering what he has done for us. Now Harvin is another story, but the few times he played he contributed greatly. Will we see him every game? I hope so. I'm not holding my breath though.

I really wonder how Twitter has impacted the NFL. I don't think it'd impact a solid GM's evaluation of talent, but I do think players are emotional creatures, some more than most. I heard GTs reaction and it sounded like he reacted to fans giving him ish for leaving. Fans saying he never lived up to the hype etc... So he fires back and rings a bell that'll be tough to u ring. Understandable, & so effin unnecessary. It's too bad that fans on Twitter tainted Tate's of fond memories in the Emerald City. I wonder how many decisions have been driven by Twitter comments made by a fan-base in advance of a decision, etc....

If so.... Ima pose as a Bear fan and start Tweeting that Alshon sucks and could never hack it in the PNW. ;-)

Good one, Sis.

The way Harvin plays it's all or nothing with him so I doubt he can take the pounding for 16 games without missing any time.
He's not built as compact as Tate is and Tate seems to bounce off of defenders more.

I have mixed emotions about Harvin. When he has played, he's played balls to the wall and left it all on the field. He gives us a home run hitting potential that we haven't had for a long, long time. But his past problems, injuries as well as attitude, still haunt me. The whole situation with his rehab and sudden return to health within hours of Pete's threatening to put him on IR smells like a fish.

Couldn't agree more. Throw in his one game return against his former team and it makes you wonder where his heart lies.

I was never on the Harvin bandwagon. And I am still not for the very same reason you mentioned.
Anyway, let's see what happens. I am not feeling very positive that we will have Harvin play for us every game.
Although Vikings fans must have been setting themselves on fire and leaping off buildings when they saw Harvin get that td during the SB.

Yea, I'm trying to bite my tongue and wait and see what happens next season. But going into the draft without our 3rd rounder is reawakening my angst over that trade. It would sure be nice to have that pick in a year like this.

I'm hoping some team sees a guy who slipped to 32 and want to move back into the first round for him.
We could get a 3rd and more in exchange depending on the team.
